Scheduled for October 2021 in New Orleans, the upcoming Produce Marketing Association (PMA) Fresh Summit Convention is on track for a big fall return. The last big event was in 2019, with a draw of over 15,600 attendees before COVID hit. 2021 will be the first year back after the gap, providing attendees to the New Orleans event access to hundreds of produce industry players as well as foodservice and retail buyers. The lack of in-person face time didn’t stop folks from being involved; 7,500 attendees participated in 2020 for the virtual version of the conference in June. However, with a return back to in-person congregation, the next PMA Convention coming up is expected to be a big one.
The PMA has for decades worked hard to represent the industry, promoting both the floral industry as well as fresh produce suppliers. By connecting suppliers with buyers at various levels, the PMA has annually opened up new marketing and sales channels for members as well as continued to sustain the fresh produce market. 2020 was an extremely rough year, testing and pointing out the shortcomings of modern supply lines and providing valuable lessons learned. PMA’s goals now for the Fresh Summit 2021 are focused on industry solutions for improving product delivery, member resilience, and market growth.
2021 Fresh Summit Convention
Obviously, COVID hasn’t gone away, and the upcoming Fresh Summit PMA event rules reflect this fact. PMA participants and attendees will still need to abide by personal protection rules to help insure safety for attendees. That includes organizational monitoring consistent with federal and local health guidelines and rules as well as proof of vaccination or negative testing results for COVID-19 shows by attendees prior to entry. Attendees will also be expected to wear a mask for theirs and others’ protection. Advance planning for these requirements is highly advised to avoid last minute hiccups and delays.
The PMA notes that everyone involved should try to be flexible as changes can happen at the last minute. The PMA is focused on the most up-to-date science-based direction for event safety and health of its members. Folks will note additional steps taken in the form of plexiglass shields at registration desks, an abundance of hand sanitizer stations, and aggressive cleaning of public surfaces around the clock to cut down on transmission risk. Walking aisles between vendors will also be spaced out for more distance to prevent crowding.
